ihcpl/week 10/summary learning 2.0

ihcpl was alot more fun than I expected! Thanks for the motivation, sincerely. if you would have told me i would do things that weren't required, i wouldn't have believed you. all of the exercises we did, although somewhat fun in nature, are very relevant to the library world. it is so important for us to keep abreast of what is new technology wise and with trends so we can effectively compete with today's world and fulfill needs of our patrons and be able to communicate with them and provide assistance to them about subjects that are important and modern. There are also so many ways to keep us on the map by participating in these applications which can help us advertise the library and its programs in addition to just getting better name recognition. specifically, having videoclips of sample programs at the library, such as babytimes, etc. and using podcasts for training (as we have already started to do)are wonderful ways of implementing 2.0. But we could also consider having a presence with a site like youtube even if its a more humorous application than serious. it would be a way to appeal to younger audiences in a way that they are relating to now. Thanks again!

ihcpl/week 9/overdrive

Checked out music by Norine Braun (Norine braun & the Mood Swings) on hcpl's site, as well as the Dollmaker by Amanda Stevens (fiction book). I am interested in listening to all of the book, I haven't found too much new fiction I'm interested in lately, and this has New Orleans as a setting, right up my alley. On LibriVox there were podcasts too but I didn't see book cover icons, which are nice and inviting. i did see them on Wowio.

ihcpl/week9/podcast subscribe

Subscribed to a texas parks related podcast to bloglines account. I thought I subscribed to one other on camping but I don't believe it went to the right place. the easy subscribe button to add to favorites is easy! podcasts are a great tool to keep abreast of library technology, trends and special interests (teens, etc.) and a great way to pursue other hobbies, interests that provide fun, education, and help us be more modern and interesting, able to help patrons with a wider range of knowledge.

ihcpl/week 9/podcasts

First had trouble getting podcast.net, went to podcast alley and when I went to get the broadcast it appeared i had to download lots and finally quit after trying a few times. back at podcast.net I went to Hennepin County teens podcast for advertising movies at the library (as opposed to blockbuster, etc.),then to Montana Fish, wildlife & Parks video library and learned about lynx in the area and how info gathered is important to share with road systems and fishing support, last went to Sunnyvale Public Library's podcast ad for Mothergoose storytime. This one, like the teen one, did not produce a videoclip on my computer, just audio. heard them sing If You're Happy and You Know It with a librarian leading and baby crying in the background, not too stimulating but great advertisement idea for programs of course, along with the movie ad for libraries.

ihcpl/week #9

I watched videos on youtube entitled the first date, no cookies in the library(classic sesame street), part of the librarian occupational ad from 1946, and one of my son's favorites, the barney version of souljah boy. They are fun to watch, especially given that the new sesame street supposedly doesn't include cookie monster because he was obese and wanted to eat cookies all the time (and oscar was too grouchy?)??? I like the vast array of videos you can view quickly and easily from subjects from travel to endangered animals to entertainment/cartoons, etc. I don't like how I looked under comedy and after viewing the first date i looked to the side and saw links to lots of crude looking videos on sex. I will definitely have to keep monitoring my son's usage closely. It would be great to look up subjects in the library catalog and have the option to have related videoclips (maybe the more educational ones such as on travel and endangered animals, etc.)available in the search. Was able to post cookie monster video to del.icio.us

zoho discussion/ihcpl/week 8/#19 bullet 3

zoho is cool. I like the way you don't have to worry about email attachments, etc. or as a backup tool this is great. easy sharing, easy to use...it would be nice if there were more fonts to choose from? email, blog, html option wonderful! spreadsheet option good too.

ihcpl/week 8/ 19online productivity/zoho

signed up for zoho but it won't come up on my screen to where i can start a new document. the computer is slow or file is large? later...i'll try again

ihcpl/week 8/social networking

concerned with revealing too much on social networking sites-not a big fan. checked out the job postings on myspace-not bad. didn't get far with facebook since i didn't want to join. i liked ning's tag cloud and read under health some blogs on diet support. also like yahoo 360, although they are in a transition stage, i signed up (liked appearance). xanga also nice layout-read thanksgiving memories and circumstantial evidence entries, also picked up a widget idea there(teeny fish tank off widget box.com and added to this blogger site to left. loved the hgtv site. (:

ihcpl/week 7/tech blog

I don't count my self as real tech savvy even though i have a cell phone, surf the internet regularly, etc. My phone is pretty basic, never had a camera phone, am just starting to use my digital camera finally. I try to keep things simple, so will definitely only use items to make life simpler, don't like reading manuals anymore. Would like to try to use some i've learned here for organizations outside in addition to inside work life. i posted a comment under participant #323's blog (pugmom) responding to their comments on technology.

ihcpl/week 7/wikis

wikis are cool. nice not to have to know html, i see you have to do things like place 2 asteriks before something to make it bold, etc. though. I have used the HCPL srp wiki before by mf in material selection. a great resource, especially for new employess. like the tracking tools and that earlier pages can be viewed. I added my blog to favorite blogs in HCPL wiki and added a comment under favorite restaurants about a pho tail recommendation. i checked out Library Success: a Best Practices Wiki, Services for Teens(which included book recommendations/synopsis), and Library Services in rural, native and tribal libraries (reported how storytime on demand-for anyone who walks in and requests it-and strong audio holdings (oral history culture here) help literacy in those communities. I also checked out the ALA event wiki for the June 21-27,2007 meeting in Washington D.C. Flip Flop Librarians Weblog was another blog I have linked to my bloglines now.

ihcpl/libraries and learning 2.0

VBPL 2.0 Thoughts on Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 (found by searching blog posts on technorati)
discusses a drop over the years in circulation at the writer's library and reasons behind (new technology). Also the idea that 2.0 is not so new-the internet's always been about sharing-this just kicks it up notch possibly.
While searching libraries 2.0 i found Libraries as space 2.0 ... and early indicators of social IT trends in which the writer discusses how libraries have evolved like the internet and social networking sites to be more social gathering spots.
All of these ideas are positive ones for the library world i believe

more week 6

also saw an interesting post on boingboing about reissued Sesame Street dvd's from the early years that are coming with a warning that they are for adults because of some of the grittier scenes from those years compared to the more glossy ones from today. Puppets smoking pipes, milking a cow with bare hands, a girl going over to Gordon's house to dinner (with his family) but he could have taken her anywhere!

ihcpl/technorati/week 6

in my technorati search i found
under blog posts:2 ?
tags:670
blog directory: 835
so yes the search used matters alot if I did it right!
Never thought about people being fulltime bloggers

ihcpl/del.icio.us/week 6

I had previously signed up for a del.icio.us account in week 2 (:
I see the potential for research ease and wider sharing with this.
Don't know if I'll use alot or not yet.

libraryelf

i signed up for libraryelf for my local library's account, since i already receive email notices from where I work. my son is signed up also-this is great since i wasn't on an email reminder service with the local library. Nice calendar on reminder and nice to have the option to have all your library reminders sent to one place.

ihcpl/librarything/#5

Signed up for librarything. looks like a good resource to determine if the books i'm interested in are really things i want to bother with reading. unsuggestions pretty funny.

ihcpl/avatars/week 5

I've obviously been playing around with avatars, this one's from meez.com
very fun to work with, so was the one from yahoo, however i couldn't figure out
how to post that one to my blog (or one from avatars.com i believe-it was more of a logo avatar)
The meez.com one was very easy to post to a blog-i made it big at first then to the sidebar,
finally figured out how to make it smaller, then put that to the sidebar, may delete the others later (: 11/20/2007

ihcpl/week 4

I've placed 14 feeds so far on my bloglines account
My address is: http:www.bloglines.com/blog/newsjunkie14
I read articles at nutrition journal and looked at librarian's internet index
which was alot different than I thought it would be like.
I love the news. This was a good exercise. I didn't think about the benefits of receiving news without the ads, etc. like you view on a website until I saw the last videoclip on RSS feeds.

Internet Safety Issues

I am concerned about internet safety and identity theft. I've known many friends and family who have had their information stolen. I try to avoid using credit cards online, but it's becoming harder to avoid. I don't like my name, address, or phone number to be on the internet.

Parks & Stuff

I'm interested in camping tips, especially beautiful and economical state parks, etc. and other travel recommendations that involve camping and/or adventure on a budget. Sites with historical significance are also great. I do have a son involved in boy scouts. He's going to Northern Tier/Boundary Waters area on the Northeast corner of Minnesota/ Canada this summer for 10 days.

For week 1, 2 : I'm a visual learner but didn't see any discussion about learning styles in the powerpoint, video that I saw?
